What is risk management in trading? The 5 rules
โ๏ธ TradeAcademy๐ก๏ธ Risk managementโฑ๏ธ 2 min read

Risk management is the set of rules that decide how much you can lose: on one trade, in one day and in total. It isn't the exciting part of trading, but it's the part that decides whether you're still trading next year. A great strategy with bad risk management still blows up; an average strategy with good risk management can survive long enough to improve.
Why it matters more than your entries
Losses hurt more than equal gains help:
| Account drawdown | Gain needed to get back to where you started |
|---|---|
| โ10% | +11% |
| โ20% | +25% |
| โ30% | +43% |
| โ50% | +100% |
Every trader has losing streaks. At 1% risk per trade, ten losses in a row costs about 10% of the account. At 5% risk, the same streak costs about 40%, and you'd need to make 67% just to recover.
The five rules
1. Fixed risk per trade
Risk the same small percentage on every trade, usually 0.5โ1% of your account. This is the most important rule. The 1% rule, step by step.
2. A stop loss on every trade
Placed where your idea is wrong, set before you enter, never widened. What is a stop loss?
3. Size from the stop, not from feelings
Lots = Risk amount รท (Stop distance ร Value per pip per lot)
Same risk in money, whether the stop is tight or wide. What is a lot?
4. Trades worth taking
Only take setups where the target is meaningfully further than the stop (for example 1.5R or more) and costs are small relative to the target. What is take profit?
5. Daily and weekly limits
Decide in advance when you stop for the day, for example after โ2% or three losses in a row. Most account blow-ups happen in one bad afternoon of "winning it back".
Hidden risks beginners miss
- Correlation: buying EUR/USD, GBP/USD and selling USD/CHF at the same time is basically one big bet against the dollar. Count related trades as one position.
- News: spreads widen and stops slip around big releases (trading the news).
- Leverage: high leverage makes oversized trades easy (leverage and margin).
- Costs: spread, commission and swap add up (hidden costs).
Your risk plan on one page
Write it down before your next trade:
- Account size: ______
- Risk per trade: % = โฌ__
- Max open risk at once: ____%
- Daily stop: โ____% or ____ losses
- Minimum reward-to-risk: ____R
- Markets and hours I trade: ______
Then follow it, especially on the days you don't want to.
