10 trading myths, debunked

โœ๏ธ TradeAcademy๐Ÿง  Mindset & researchโฑ๏ธ 2 min read

Trading attracts more myths than almost any other subject. Some make it sound easier than it is, others make it sound like a scam. Here are ten we hear most, and what's actually true.

Myth 1: "Trading is just gambling."

Partly true for many people, false by nature. Casino games have a built-in negative edge that no skill can change. Markets don't: results depend on your rules, costs and risk control. But people who trade without a plan do behave like gamblers, and research shows trading often substitutes for lottery tickets. Full answer, with the research.

Myth 2: "Forex is a scam."

The market is real; many sellers around it aren't. Currency markets are used by banks, companies and governments and supervised by regulators. The scams are unregulated brokers, fake account managers and guaranteed-profit schemes. How to tell them apart.

Myth 3: "Most traders make money."

False. EU regulators found 74โ€“89% of retail CFD accounts lose money. Brokers must publish their own percentage on their websites. Anyone who hides this from you isn't being straight.

Myth 4: "You can't make a living from trading."

Rare, not impossible. Trading is a full-time profession at banks, market makers and funds. For private day traders, studies show only around 1% earn consistent profits after costs. Trading as a profession.

Myth 5: "You need a lot of money to start."

False, butโ€ฆ You can open an account with โ‚ฌ100 or less and trade micro lots. What you need is money you can afford to lose and realistic expectations: a small account can't produce a salary.

Myth 6: "Higher leverage means bigger profits."

False. Leverage only changes how much margin a trade uses. Your profit and loss come from position size and price movement. High leverage mostly makes it easy to open trades that are too big. Leverage and margin.

Myth 7: "A good trader wins most of their trades."

False. Many profitable traders win fewer than half their trades. A 40% win rate with winners twice the size of losers is profitable; a 70% win rate with large losses can lose money. Win rate vs. reward-to-risk.

Myth 8: "Stop losses get hunted, so don't use them."

Dangerous. Stops placed at obvious levels do get hit more often, so place them where your idea is wrong, outside normal noise. Trading without a stop is how one bad day wipes out months. What is a stop loss?

Myth 9: "The right indicator or robot will do it for you."

False. Indicators are calculations on past prices; they can help structure decisions but don't predict the future. "Never-losing" bots and guaranteed returns are a classic scam pattern.

Myth 10: "Trading is exciting."

Good trading is mostly boring. Waiting for your setup, sizing correctly, writing in your journal. If it feels like a thrill ride, your risk is probably too high.
